The Work
Visionaries in Exile is a 1995 hybrid CD-ROM for Macintosh and Windows — an interactive encyclopedia of twenty Austrian architects and artists who emigrated to the United States between 1911 and 1941. Joseph Urban, Richard Neutra, Rudolf Schindler, Friedrich Kiesler, Victor Gruen, Bernard Rudofsky, Adolf Loos, Josef Hoffmann, and others — their lives told through more than 2,000 images, five hours of narration, film footage, documents, and a web of associations that let the user navigate freely between biographies, historical contexts, and ideas.

It was not an electronic brochure. It was a new kind of cultural machine. It made knowledge navigable.

"The story of the architects powerfully told through interactive media."

WIRED · 1996

"A solid, good-looking production — it shows architecture's interconnections the way no book can. The medium is the argument."

taz · die tageszeitung · July 1996

"Unusually deep, elegant, and ambitious. It holds a large body of material in an organic and fluid form."

I.D. Magazine · 1996

"Not an electronic brochure — a new kind of cultural machine."
